Pxlate is a Chrome extension that censors video and page content in real time. The whole pipeline — pixelation, blur, eye-bar tracking, color masking — runs on the device. There is no Pxlate server that ever receives what you watch: we don't upload, stream, or store your content.
1. What we collect
Nothing about your browsing. Pxlate has no analytics, no telemetry, no logging server, and no remote code. The extension does not record which pages you visit, which videos you process, which zones you draw, or which settings you choose. Those are stored locally in your browser using chrome.storage.
2. Network requests
Pxlate processes images and video right on your device — none of your content is ever sent to a Pxlate server. The extension only goes online for Pro features:
- Licensing. To unlock, verify, or release Pxlate Pro, the extension checks your license with our payment provider (LemonSqueezy) and a small Pxlate license-support service. These requests only ever send your license key — never anything about the pages you visit or the media you process.
- Media mode. When you pick a specific image or video to censor at full quality, Pxlate loads that same file again from the website you're already on. That request goes to that site, not to us, and only for the item you picked.
Free users (Page mode) never go online at all. The face-detection model used by Media mode ships inside the extension and is never downloaded later.
3. Permissions and why we need them
- storage — to save your zones, preferences, and license status between sessions.
- activeTab + scripting — to inject the censoring overlay into the page you're currently on, only when you activate it.
- declarativeNetRequestWithHostAccess — to let Media mode load the image or video you picked at full quality so it can be censored cleanly. It only affects media you choose to process and never reads or records your browsing.
- alarms — to schedule periodic license re-validation for Pro users.
- host access for licensing — Pxlate connects to our payment provider and licensing service only to check your Pro license. It never requests access to the sites you browse.
- optional host permissions (*://*/*) — granted only after you explicitly enable Pxlate on a given site. We never request blanket access on install.
4. Third-party services
The only outside company that handles your data is LemonSqueezy, our payment provider, which processes Pro purchases and license checks — their privacy policy covers the payment itself, and we receive only your license key. Our own licensing service (hosted on Cloudflare) likewise uses only your license key to manage your Pro activations across devices. Neither ever receives anything about the pages you visit or the media you process. We don't share, sell, or transfer your data to anyone else.
5. Children
Pxlate is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from anyone.
